Sweep and Keep Challenge: Master Bedroom/ Prayer-Study Space Week Two
Week Two:
Prioritize- *Break room up into zones and figure out what each zone needs to have optimal function.
*Make a list and head to the store to pick up what you need. What is the priority as far as function for this overall space?
Okay, hopefully Week One went off without a hitch for you and you are ready to dive into week two of the Master Bedroom Sweep & Keep Challenge! I actually have a little more De-cluttering to do with clothing and I have to run the carpet shampooer this week over a few spots. My husband’s clothing will be saved for a later time because I need his input for most of it. Other than that, my room has a fresh coat of paint (a light robin egg blue), furniture has been re-arranged, everything has been cleaned from top to bottom and my prayer space is looking much more inviting than before! I love how making a few simple changes can immediately give a space so much more purpose! Now it is time to look at my “zones” and figure out how to make them more functional and pretty. Here are the zones I have designated in my room and the work I’d like to do in each of them starting this week:
- Prayer/study space- This is a corner next to my bed that has my grandmother’s rocking chair and a lamp. There are two ways I love to pray- walking back and forth, or kneeling while resting my bible, head or arms on a chair seat- not sure why, but these are the ways I prefer to pray. In the middle of the night, I like my seat to be next to my bed so I can just slip off the bed onto the floor to pray. Because it is a rocking chair, it is also comfy to sit and read my bible if I choose to. There are a few things I’d like to do with this space: 1) I have an old cheese box that a friend gave me that I use to hold books, I’d like to stain and decoupage it, maybe line it with some fabric and use it to hold my bible, notebook and maybe a few other resources. I normally study the bible in my office, so I won’t need a large space for all my study resources, but a few, like a prayer book, or confession list, would be nice. The cheese box would be perfect for this. 2) I’d like a couple decorative hooks for my prayer shawls so I’ll probably head to the hardware store for those this week. 3) I would like one piece of art with a saying that represents that space, like a scripture about seeking the Lord or prayer. I do have a small framed Family Prayer that I may use, but I am thinking of something a little bigger for that wall. I have a plaque that will also be hung there. There also might be a place for these neat shelves I saw recently. 4) Finally, I may take an old pillow and make a kneeling cushion out of it for comfort while praying if I have time this week.
- My Dresser Space- My dresser drawers are a wreck! 1) I will be searching for a better way to organize accessories, undergarments and socks this week! The top two drawers are really small and usually become a dumping ground for small items found, but I’d like them to house something better, like worship cd collections, maybe one drawer will be devoted to my k-cups, because I keep my Keurig in my room. (Don’t ask, but there really is a reason for it being in my room!) 2) I’ll be dealing with the surface of my dresser this week, which gets cluttered quickly. I want to search around the house for containers that can be decoupaged to match the decor of my room and hold various sized items. I need an extension cord for the Keurig now that I’ve re-arranged furniture, so that goes on the list for the hardware store. 3) On the wall next to my dresser, I have a collage frame that I am going to fill with wedding photos of hubby and me.
- Husband’s Dresser Space- Nothing really needs to be done for the surface, we have a tv setting on top of it right now and until we get our mountable tv, the space is taken. I will wait to address his drawers when he has time to direct me on how he would like things. 1) One thing I would like to do on his dresser wall is hang photos of each of the children. 2) I will also set up our hamper next to his dresser, I’d really like to buy a new one, but for now, the one we have will do.
- Closet- Yikes!!! As I said earlier, there is still some de-cluttering left to do, so that is number one on the list. After that is finished, I will: 1) Buy more hangers if necessary, install hooks for my purses and scarves, and switch out the storage bins with new ones that are better sized for that space. 2) I’d like to utilize the floor space with a set a drawers/shelves etc… I will most likely search the thrift stores for something suitable. 3) The closet doors are the sliding kind and need a new track, this will go on the repair list for hubby.
- Door entry/Mirror space- This is such a weird space in my room. As you walk into my room, on the left side there is a little ‘nook’ just big enough for a person to stand in, it houses my full length mirror perfectly, but it is still an awkward space. So all i am going to do here, is leave the mirror and hang some pics above it because I really do not know what else to do with this space. If it bugs me too much, I may remove the mirror eventually and place a tall plant there or something.
- Bed Space- I had already invested in some under-bed storage bins for shoes, so my shoes finally have a place to call home. I will probably invest in two more for my hubby’s shoes soon, so that space is claimed. My main goal for the wall space is to hang photos, mount a decorative piece and I would LOVE to place a vinyl saying on the wall that is significant about marriage above it all. I am also on the hunt for materials to make a headboard to complete my look for the bed. My husband’s side of the bed has a cute little end table that will probably be painted to match the room, but other than that, this space is functioning well.
The only other thing that I’d like to see eventually is new curtain rods and curtains, but the ones I have now are just fine.
I am so excited about working on my projects this week, I will update and include my finished projects here for the cheese box, end table, cushion, etc. as I complete them to show you what I’ve been up to!
What about you? Any cool projects or ideas to share in week two? Post them here under comments so others can glean from you! See you next week!

i’m on the hunt for blue accessories for my living room, and birdie decor, I’ve always thought birds were only for old lady houses (my grandma loved blue and birds!), but I’ve decided I like them too much, so be it, I’m hitting the golden years early!
Amanda, I am thinking of doing something like this in my room for decor: http://pinterest.com/pin/233272455668668891/ It looks like I could easily make something similar with colors to coordinate in my bedroom, I may even have some fabric already in my stash!
